What would you do if no one was looking? Another way of looking at it is, would you do something wrong if you wouldn’t get caught? Ethics is a set of moral principles, that governs a persons or group of peoples actions or behavior.
Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is looking. As I was thinking of Ethnic Integrity kept came to mind. Doing what is right. But how do we decide what is right?
When I stated the happiness project I took the survey about values that were important to me. I believe that striving to live by my values is one way of having integrity and being ethical.
My faith and professional standards and code of Ethics helps guide my integrity. So for me to live by these principles and ethical codes, I must learn them, know them, and practice them. First I need to read what my professional code of Ethics says about how I carry myself and practice my professional standards. I also need to read the Bible to know what it says about how I should carry myself and how I should act and behave. But it doesn’t stop with just reading how I should act it is followed up with know them. Knowing how to act takes the commitment to understand and know what it says. To be honest, there is a lot of information in the Counseling Code of Ethic and in the Bible. Knowing the information takes a lot of reading, re-reading and a desire to know what it says. It is also important to go to other people who can help you along the way.
The last part of this Ethical standard is practicing it. Knowing something and not doing it is so common. Very often we know what we need to do to live a healthy and Ethical life but we don’t do it. We don’t practice it! Integrity is doing the right thing, saying the right thing or even thinking the right thing when no one is looking or when no one else will know. Ethics isn’t always easy, but its the right thing to do.
